1. Overview:

In the primary school phase (ages 6 – 11), students engage in the exploration and practical application of their mother tongue through the Vietnamese Language curriculum. This encompasses sub-disciplines such as: Reading; Comprehension; Writing; Spelling; Storytelling; Vocabulary and Grammar; and Composition. Vietnamese Language serves as the cornerstone for the development of language skills:

  • Firstly, through consistent refinement of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking skills, students’ utilisation of the Vietnamese language progresses from innate to proficient and purposeful. They demonstrate accurate spelling, precise pronunciation, and a gradual enhancement of both fluency and quality to suit various communicative contexts. They adeptly apply their vocabulary and expressive skills to lucidly depict their surroundings and confidently articulate their own emotions and thoughts.
  • Secondly, students start to develop personal perspectives through the comprehension of diverse texts within the curriculum and the creation of written and oral compositions (ranging from simple descriptions and narratives to responses to questions, etc.). The process is essential for nurturing life experiences, constructing values, instilling self-confidence, and shaping a clear portrait of the students for future reference.
  • Thirdly, the Vietnamese Language curriculum introduces challenges aimed at encouraging students to gather information from diverse sources, compare, and select pertinent content to address inquiries arising from literary works or real-life issues. This promotes students’ proactive and adaptable mindset in processing information, transforming them into discerning users in the era of media proliferation. Furthermore, it serves as a platform for students to develop research skills and cultivate self-directed learning habits.

In essence, Vietnamese Language is a foundational and indispensable subject within the domain of linguistics, as it equips students with essential knowledge and skills pivotal for the progressive development of their mother tongue throughout subsequent stages. The knowledge and skills are designed in a diverse array of formats, emphasising engaging  learning activities, game-based learning, and cultivation of multiple intelligences to captivate attention, foster proactive participation, and deepen students’ love for their mother tongue.

To realise these objectives, each Vietnamese Language session prioritises an active and participatory pedagogical approach, fostering a vibrant and dynamic linguistic environment to captivate student interest. Tailored to the inquisitive and eager nature of primary school students, language lessons are structured as a series of educational games rooted in the theory of Multiple Intelligences. This approach enables students to seamlessly integrate learning and play, thereby fostering the holistic development of Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and language application skills. Through each Vietnamese Language session, students actively employ the language across diverse contexts, bolstering their confidence and nurturing their imaginative and critical thinking abilities.
