Roadmap to help Vinsers successfully apply to any university

Thursday, 29/09/2022, 15:09 (GMT+7)

All top universities of such as Harvard, UPenn, and Duke select undergraduate candidates based on four key criteria: academic achievement (GPA) including grades in All Courses and Grades in College Prep Courses/ Subject Test Scores (AP, IB); SAT/ACT results; IELTS/TOEFL results; and social activities and unique differences or competencies.

In recent years, many top universities in Vietnam have started to change the method of admission, gradually approaching global admission criteria in order to more comprehensively assess students’ abilities and competencies. A part of the criteria, for admission to these universities, are: combining an international English certificate with the score of two high school subjects; or consider the profile of competence, which is similar to international universities, including high school results, interviews, high school graduation exam scores in 2022; or international education certificates (A-Level) such as Vietnam National University-Hanoi; or direct admission based on the results of SAT/ ACT/ A -Level/ AP/ IB in the form of talent recruitment of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Understanding this changing trend as well as the requirements of national and international universities, Vinschool has been “ahead of the curve”, building a learning roadmap so that students can increase their application advantage, by holding three different sessions: one focus throughout Grade 9 & 10; a second area of focus in Grade 11; and a third focus in Grade 12.

Let’s look through the learning roadmap and career orientation dedicated to Vinsers in grades 9 – 10 – 11 – 12, built by a team of academic advisors, right below!

Grades 9 & 10 – Discovery

From the beginning of 9th grade, students will begin to learn about potential careers and discover themselves through personality tests, identifying their interests, passions, strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, the Career Orientation handbook is shared by the mentors with detailed information about future careers and the requirements related to their field of study.

Students are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities at school to have more experiences such as: participating in Sports, Arts, Science; or Skills clubs, for example, TEDx Vinstar, Debaters, Business Club; or competitions organised by the school such as- Innovative Marketers, Innovation Challenge…

Student Ngô Minh Châu, who successfully obtained a 100% scholarship at Yonsei University, shared: “The experiences at Vinschool, especially extracurricular activities have helped me a lot in the process of discovering my passion and strengths.”

Not only that, at this stage, students will be focused on strengthening their learning habits to improve their grades, and are supported to focus on their universities’  admission subject combination. These activities give them time to discover their passions while focusing on their central subjects.

Grade 11: Acceleration

After the process of learning about themselves, with practical experiences such as participating in vocational learning programmes, students are free to design their learning path in line with their passion for the profession and university they wish to pursue in the future.

Students also receive the support and 1-on-1 counselling of academic advisors to help develop plans and goals in accordance with the orientation of their chosen majors and universities.

At this stage, depending on the objectives, students are consulted to participate in intensive extracurricular activities, volunteer activities or extracurricular clubs and complete standardised exams such as SAT, ACT, IELTS, AP courses, etc. to be ready for the Early Admission to University application plan.

One of the priority activities in grade 11 is the college application and scholarship plan that is specially prepared for Vinsers. Students will have the opportunity to participate in events organised by the school such as exhibitions, and information seminars about universities. Thereby, they can make a list of universities that they are interested in, study the method of admission, the requirements related to scholarships, and the list of necessary documents.

Ms. Đỗ Hồng Hạnh – a parent of Nguyễn Tử Minh who enrolled in Cambridge University recently, shared: “At Vinschool, my child is equipped with not only academic knowledge but also the necessary skills and qualities in life. His passion for scientific research was soon discovered, fostered and built a focused path for my children to keep striving for goals, and achievements in learning and scientific research. This process helps him grow up to be independent and active. The family believes that in whatever environment he is about to enter to continue his studies, the good things obtained from school will always be the foundation for my child to develop his abilities and achieve his dreams in the future. “

Grade 12: Reaching the finish line

12th Grade students are encouraged to take time to visit the Universities they are considering in order to learn about the university they wish to study at. They will also receive the support of Academic Advisors to prepare the required applications for college.

At the same time, at this stage of the ‘sprint’, students will spend more time reviewing the learning objectives they have covered, focusing on studying, and preparing for the high school exam, therefore having a impressive transcript for the admission council.

“Being able to continuously improve their English skills early on, 92% of Vinschool students have an IELTS certificate with an average score of 7.0. This is the advantage that helps them move faster on the path to success.” Ms. Nguyễn Thúy Ngọc, Head of the Academic Advisor Team joyously shared while talking about the academic results for the year 2020-2021.
