A Solid Launchpad to Success

As the son of a traditional family with expectations to pursue “safe and stable” careers like medicine or law, Hưng faced significant pressure when following his passion for sociology and the arts. Despite these pressures and expectations, Sỹ Hưng remained steadfast in developing his talents, proving his capabilities, and gradually gaining his family’s support for the unique path he chose.

During his time at Vinschool, Hưng was encouraged to confidently express himself, cultivate independent thinking, and was given the best conditions to pursue his passions through a personalized education program and various clubs in film, economics, and social sciences. Notably, Hưng’s talents and passion flourished when he became a Talented Student in Global Issues Research at Vinschool’s GATE Center. There, he participated in research on Economics and Education with experts from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences’ Southeast Asia Research Institute. “The experiences with GATE were a crucial foundation for my larger future endeavors” Hưng shared.

Fueled by passion and the nurturing environment at Vinschool, Hưng achieved remarkable successes in his favorite fields: winning both domestic and international film awards, ranking in the top 5 of the International Economics Olympiad Essay Challenge, a major global essay competition for young people under 20, and publishing research on “Economics and Education in Southeast Asian Countries” in the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences’ journal. These accomplishments significantly contributed to Hưng’s strong impression and opened the doors to Brown University.

Moreover, the personalized education program and inspiring learning environment at Vinschool helped Sỹ Hưng achieve impressive academic results: a SAT score of 1550, an IELTS score of 8.5, and straight A in four AS Level subjects: Economics, Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics, making a strong impression on the admissions committee. “I am very grateful to the teachers at Vinschool who have supported me a lot, even beyond the classroom. The frequent use of English at school also helped me become proficient, giving me the confidence to express myself during the Brown University application process”, Hưng expressed.

Standing Out with Multi-Disciplinary Talents

Hưng’s passion for multiple fields was the “key” that made him stand out among thousands of applicants in his quest to join Brown University. “Typically, students focus on one strength, but I wanted to be recognized in both social sciences (economics, philosophy, sociology) and the arts (filmmaking). In my application, I emphasized the importance and connection between these two fields. I believe this distinction helped me stand out, as most Vietnamese students usually prioritize STEM fields”, Hưng explained.

Hưng’s passion was further demonstrated in his essay, which narrated his journey of pursuing sociology and the arts, inspired by his grandfather—a wartime doctor who saved many lives. Through his essay, Hưng expressed his desire to preserve and “eternalize” these lives through his works and research. “This is my way of exceeding my family’s expectations and continuing my grandfather’s legacy, but in my own way”, Hưng emphasized. Additionally, he showcased his filmmaking talent through a creative 2-minute video, introducing himself through the lens of colors. This earned him acceptance from Brown University—a renowned institution known for its open learning philosophy and encouragement of creativity and interdisciplinary studies.

Aiming for Social Change

Although he has not yet decided on a major, Sỹ Hưng plans to pursue a dual degree in Economics and Modern Culture & Media at Brown University to continue his dual passions. Over the next four years, Hưng aims to develop impactful creative art projects that can drive social change. “Pursue your passion and seek help when needed. Anyone can make a difference if they are determined and persistent”, Hưng shared.
