The exciting journey of making pottery for the young Vinsers

Our Alvin students had useful and memorable experiences through the outdoor activity “Pottery Making”. The children had the chance to explore the world of clay and pottery, the familiar materials containing many interesting things. Besides, the children also created unique ceramic products with their imprints.

This outdoor activity was a great opportunity for the children to summarize the Science knowledge they had learned through the topic “Materials in our world”.

First, the children got acquainted with clay, a soft, smooth soil that easily changes shape. By touching the clay and challenging with making pottery, Alvin Vinsers were very excited to share with the teachers: “I see that clay is flexible.”, “I can stretch, compress, twist, or bend clay”. This is also an opportunity for children to explore the properties of materials and feel the excitement of “transforming” clay into different shapes.

After completing the product, the children observed their work and memorized the processes they had just made such as stretching, compressing, or twisting, then re-drawing the products’ shapes on the worksheet. This activity helps children consolidate their prior knowledge and trains their ability to observe, memorize intentionally, and express themselves through images.

At the picnic, the children also decorated ceramic plates. This activity helps children freely develop their creative thinking. Each product shows its personality, personal color, and each child’s effort.

This interesting pottery-making journey will bring back beautiful memories in the hearts of the young Vinsers!
