Students from the GATE Center won 2 gold medals at WICO 2020

Monday, 07/09/2020, 10:09 (GMT+7)

First time representing Vietnam at the 10th World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO 2020), two groups of students from Vinschool’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Center competed with 500 other candidates from many countries around the world, including the US, Canada, New Zealand and China, and won 2 gold medals for their impressive projects:

  • “Study on chemical constituents and antibacterial properties of stingless bee propolis collected in the provinces of Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang” by Nguyen Tu Minh, Nguyen Phan Ngoc Minh and Truong Vinh Xuan
  • “Study on generation of high-yield cordyceps strains with ascosporic hybridization” by Phan Vu Linh Huong, Trinh Minh Quan and Le Duc Minh

As part of the science competition and exhibition network under the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA), the World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO) is annually held by the Korea University Invention Association (KUIA) and sponsored by the Korean National Assembly. This is a prestigious science and technology research competition for students where their products are appraised by the world’s leading scientists according to international evaluation criteria. Every year, WICO attracts hundreds of contestants from dozens of countries around the globe.

Proactively accustoming themselves to WICO’s specific requirements and appreciation for creativity, the two groups of Vinsers made scientific reports in the form of lively videos with the support and guidance of their devoted mentors.

Besides quality scientific reports, Vinsers also impressed the judges with their abilities to design creative, vivid posters and videos and deliver their presentations in English very fluently and proficiently. The gold medals were worth their tireless efforts to conduct experiments, collect data, carry out research and practice soft skills with the guidance and training provided by the GATE Center.

“I felt very surprised and proud upon learning that we won a gold medal. Our hard work for a year has paid off”, shared Nguyen Tu Minh.

Thanks to this international science competition, Vinsers have acquired invaluable experience and got motivated to continue pursuing their passion for scientific research:

“I was overwhelmed by the specialized knowledge offered by experts and the strict procedures in the lab when we first came to the GATE Center and embarked on this project. Thanks to the experiences we had, our scientific research capacity goes beyond what is normally expected from high school students”, shared Truong Vinh Xuan.

Congratulations to Vinsers for leaving their mark in another international science competition! Hopefully, such achievements will fuel their passion for scientific research and motivate them to carry out further projects that could benefit our society.

Study on chemical constituents and antibacterial properties of stingless bee propolis collected in the provinces of Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang

Through the identification and isolation of antibacterial active ingredients in stingless bee propolis, the group studied how to integrate them into healthcare products such as mouth wash and antibiotics for prevention of bacterial diseases. Their research is to evaluate the application of anti-cancer properties of stingless bee propolis.

During the project implementation, the GATE Center introduced the “young researchers” to Mr. Le Nguyen Thanh, PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, who is working at the Center for Research and Development of Ethno-medicinal Plants under the Institute of Marine Biochemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

Study on production of high-yield cordyceps strains with ascosporic hybridization

The group studied how to generate high-yield strains of cordyceps (a type of mushroom with high value and many beneficial properties such as immunomodulation, blood fat reduction, resistance to blood cancer cells, etc.) with ascosporic hybridization. These advanced strains are expected to have lower production costs.

Mentorship was offered by Ms. Le Thi Tuoi, PhD in Genetic Engineering and Biochemistry, who is working at the Faculty of Biology, Hanoi University of Education.
