Grade 1 Vinsers explore Venn diagram – practicing good habits and spreading kindness
In a Cambridge Mathematics lesson, Grade 1 Vinsers embarked on a meaningful learning journey with a dual-purpose lesson focusing on developing mathematics knowledge & skills and instilling positive moral values.
Students were introduced to a Venn diagram with 2 labeled circles: “Good Actions for Yourself” and “Good Actions for Friends/Others.” Using this tool, they explored how to categorize actions based on who they benefit, while also identifying similarities and differences between them. This served as a foundation for building organizational thinking and developing mathematical reasoning in a visual and engaging way.

During the lesson, students participated in exciting interactive activities:
- Warm-up: Prompted by thought-provoking questions from the teacher such as: “What daily-life actions help you or others?”, students quickly identified meaningful everyday actions.
- Categorization Practice: Students were given “action cards” with specific examples such as “Eat lots of fruits and vegetables,” “Go to bed on time,” “Maintain shared cleanliness,” “Help a friend,” and “Give up your seat to the elderly on the bus.” Through discussion and debate, they decided where each card belonged on the Venn diagram: good only for themselves, good only for others, or good for both. This activity not only enhanced students’ classification skills but also fostered reasoning and critical thinking – essential components of higher-order thinking.

- Observation, Comparison, and Reflection: After completing the classification activity, students observed the diagram together and discussed the significance of each section. They came to realize that some actions benefit only oneself, others mainly help people around them, while some bring joy and support to both themselves and the community. By the end of the lesson, students understood that small daily actions can both build personal habits and contribute to a positive living environment.

Through this lesson, Vinsers developed a strong grasp of basic Venn diagram concepts while sharpening essential skills such as classification, comparison, reasoning, and argumentation – all crucial for holistic development in both academic and personal life. Moreover, identifying and practicing good actions helped them embrace the values of kindness, empathy, and a sense of responsibility toward their community.
