Vinser Bentley Minh Nhat Secures A VND 8 Billion Scholarship To Dartmouth College: Filmmaking Passion Guides The Way To The Prestigious Ivy League

"Cinema is how I tell my stories," said Nguyen Bentley Minh Nhat, an exceptional Year 12 student at Vinschool The Harmony. He recently penned a remarkable chapter in his own story by earning an 8 billion VND scholarship to Dartmouth College during the Early Decision admissions round. This prestigious Ivy League institution in the United States boasts an acceptance rate of just 6%.
  • A grades in all AS Level subjects: Economics, Business, Media Studies, Maths
  • SAT 1530
  • Three international and two national awards in international and national filmmaking competitions.

A Clear Path to Success

At Dartmouth College, Bentley will pursue a unique combination of Film and Business studies, paving the way for his dream of becoming a talented filmmaker. His passion for cinema began at the age of 10 when he taught himself filmmaking through YouTube tutorials. At Vinschool, this passion flourished within an open and creative environment enriched by extracurricular activities and a dedicated film club. Here, Bentley found like-minded peers and opportunities to participate in national and international filmmaking competitions, earning three international and two national awards with his compelling short films.

Concurrently, Vinschool’s Cambridge programme provided Bentley with a strong academic foundation. He secured four A grades in Business Studies, Economics, Media Studies, and Mathematics at AS Level, alongside an impressive SAT score of 1530. “The variety of Cambridge subjects at Vinschool allowed me to choose courses aligned with my passion, guided by devoted academic advisors. The Cambridge teachers, hailing from diverse countries, are outstanding professionals. I am deeply grateful for their guidance,” Bentley shared.

Bentley also demonstrated strategic boldness in his choice of universities. He shifted his focus from New York University and the University of Southern California—renowned for film studies but offering limited scholarships for international students—to Ivy League schools with strong film programmes, generous financial aid, and rigorous academic quality. “Dartmouth ticks all the boxes for my family and me: top-notch education, substantial scholarships, and stellar reputation,” Bentley explained about his life-changing decision.

Leaving a Mark Through Passion and Creativity

“I think they liked me because, first, I’m very passionate. Throughout my application and portfolio, my passion for filmmaking was always clear. From my extracurriculars, to my passion projects, to my college essays, everything involved filmmaking. People tend to think that colleges look for someone that’s good at everything and does everything. But I think they are looking for someone that is really good at 1 thing or extremely passionate about 1 particular thing. A specialist beats a generalist in this situation (in my opinion). Another reason I think they liked me is because I’m unique.” Bentley said.

For example, Bentley’s supplemental essay outlined his ambition to create films based on Vietnamese folklore, such as Sơn Tinh – Thủy Tinh or Thánh Gióng, but with a genuine approach that highlights the essence of Vietnamese culture, rather than following the commercialized, Hollywood-inspired style that often loses the true spirit of Vietnamese tradition, as exemplified by the recent horror film “Cám.”

This distinctiveness also shines through his short films addressing issues like homophobia and toxic masculinity in Vietnamese culture—sensitive, underexplored social topics in the nation’s cinema. “I think universities love it when students are unique in these kinds of ways, trying to oppose the norm or having their own critical thinking and views on societal stuff (and it’s also important to take action on it too). Also, I think this works for all aspects of life, but try to show that you are genuinely a good, kind, and caring person. Everyone loves that.” Bentley reflected.

At Vinschool, Bentley was encouraged not only to develop his skills and knowledge but also to nurture critical thinking and self-expression. The school’s emphasis on independent thought and respect for individuality instilled the confidence Bentley needed to pursue his passion and boldly present his unique ideas.

Armed with meticulous preparation, exceptional talent, and a bold, independent perspective, Bentley emerged as a standout applicant, embodying the “Dartmouth vibe” sought by the admissions committee. “I think you would be a great addition to Dartmouth. I feel like you really have that Dartmouth vibe and I will definitely vouch for you in my report.” remarked the committee during Bentley’s 15-mins interview.

Aiming for International Filmmaking

Securing direct admission to Dartmouth College, Bentley looks forward to honing his filmmaking skills over the next four years while pursuing a greater goal: becoming a professional filmmaker capable of supporting his family. “There’s a saying from Connor Roy in the show Succession that I always follow: “I’m like water I flow.” This means that I try not to care or worry too much about my future. Like water, I flow, shape, and adapt to any surroundings, environments, situations, and try to make the best of it.” Bentley shared.

Nguyen Bentley Minh Nhat’s journey is a vivid testament to the power of dreaming big and pursuing it with unwavering passion and belief. Congratulations, Bentley! We look forward to seeing you shine as a young talent, crafting remarkable works in global cinema.
