A signing ceremony to mark strategic collaboration between Vingroup, Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania

On April 03, 2018, Vingroup JSC officially signed a strategic collaboration agreement with two of the top 20 Universities in the world, Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania. The event confirms Vingroup’s long-term vision and commitment to create a breakthrough in the quality of higher education, aiming to achieve world-class standards for Vingroup in the education and health care sectors.

After the official announcement to enter the higher education sector 28 days ago, Vingroup organized the “Signing Ceremony of Strategic Collaboration” and symposium on “Vietnam’s Higher Education in the 21st Century: Global Connection Towards Advancing Future” with two academic advisors; Cornell University (Cornell) and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn).

Under the agreement, Cornell will support VinUni to define its strategy, to position its brand and develop a comprehensive University governance system. With an exceptional strong track record in the education of business, management, technology and engineering, Cornell will support VinUni in reviewing facilities, recruiting key positions, developing teaching and researching capacities of academic staff, designing and validating educational programs, collaborating in research and evaluating the first bachelor’s degree cohorts in the Business and Technology programs.

Penn, which boasts exceptional nursing and medical schools, and supports one of the finest teaching hospital systems in the United States, will support VinUni in recruiting and developing faculty, and enrolling, training and developing student careers in Health Sciences. Specifically, Penn will work with both VinUni and Vinmec healthcare system to develop MD, medical residency, and bachelor of nursing programs that achieve accreditation and build professional competences towards the highest international standards. Penn will also collaborate with Vinmec to develop and train clinical instructors, improve healthcare service quality and expand its specialty practices, assisting Vinmec in becoming a model teaching hospital that supports the VinUni Health Sciences programs.

At the signing ceremony, Prof. William W. Huling Jr., Cornell Project Director – VinUni, said: “Cornell is honored to collaborate with Vingroup to build a world-class university in Vietnam. We will endeavor to support VinUni to fulfill its mission and to achieve its goals. This is also Cornell’s mission to contribute to global education”.   

Professor Glen Gaulton, Vice Dean cum Director of Global Health Center of Penn, said: “In the preparation for cooperation, Penn was impressed that Vingroup set the highest expectations for VinUni and Vinmec program outcomes and consistently emphasized the need to achieve international standards of excellence in education and health care. Penn fully agrees with Vingroup that the results from these efforts will nurture a new generation of Vietnamese nurses and physicians who will make fundamental changes in the quality of health care for the Vietnamese people, in both the short and long-term”.

The strategic relationships with Cornell and Penn serves as  the catalyzing first step in building international standards, integrating the best models of education for VinUni and contributing to the development of higher education quality in Vietnam.

With enthusiasm for creating a better life for Vietnamese people, Vingroup has set the goal for VinUni to appear on the Global Map of Higher Education through accreditation and ranking by the prestigious quality ranking agencies such as, Quacquarelli Symonds and Times Higher Education. The construction of the campus of VinUni is expected to start in 2018 and officially enroll its first cohort in 2020 in Hanoi.

According to the QS 2018, Penn ranked 19th overall in the world, 18th in Medicine and 1st in Nursing. According to US News and World Report, Penn Healthcare Systems is amongst the top 10 best hospitals in the United States and Penn Medical School ranked fifth in research productivity. Penn is now implementing the Penn Compact 2020 which will emphasize three areas: inclusion, innovation and impact.
