Mathematical thinking moment: When Grade 2 Vinsers discover that different fractions can have the same value
Friday, 01/11/2024, 16:11 (GMT+7)
For 2nd graders at Vinschool, small discoveries often lead to big strides in their understanding.
One of the most memorable moments is when students realize that 2/4 and 1/2 are simply two ways to express the same value. This goes beyond learning numbers—it highlights students’ growing logical thinking and natural curiosity.
Students are introduced to fractions naturally through a fun game of Bingo. Each student has their own Bingo card, where they mark the correct squares as they identify fractions that correspond to the shapes and values called out. They also work in groups to find visual cards that represent different fractions. Through these activities, students gradually uncover equivalent fractions and discover for themselves that 1/2 and 2/4 are, indeed, equal.
Students eagerly participate in the Bingo game.
Curiosity-Driven Discovery
What’s remarkable is that the realization that 2/4 and 1/2 are equivalent did not come from the teacher’s explanation but rather from students’ own curiosity and eagerness to explore. This realization allows them to view fractions as more than mere numbers—they begin to see them as relationships between parts of a whole.
From Specialization to Generalization
Recognizing 2/4 and 1/2 as equal demonstrates the process of specialization and generalization—a core element in the Cambridge Mathematics Program at Vinschool. Initially, students focus on each fraction individually through interactive activities, representing specialization. When they grasp that two fractions can be equal even if represented differently, they step into generalization, understanding that fractions can be simplified and represented in multiple ways. This skill is essential in Mathematics, helping students identify patterns and connections between numbers.
Specialization: Students recognize each individual fraction through the Bingo game.Specialization: Students search for images that represent the corresponding fractions.Students discuss in pairs to identify images that represent equivalent values.Students realize that 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, moving towards generalization.Students understand that a fraction can be represented in multiple ways.
The Joy of Discovering Equivalent Fractions
Realizing that 2/4 and 1/2 are equal sparks a sense of excitement and exploration in students. In that moment, they see math as more than memorizing numbers—it becomes a journey of uncovering hidden rules and patterns.
At this age, children are driven by a passion for self-discovery. When they find a mathematical rule on their own, their confidence grows, fueling a desire to continue learning and face new challenges eagerly.
