Talking To Children About Gender

Tuesday, 08/04/2025, 13:04 (GMT)

By the age of ten, children experience significant physical and psychological changes. Many parents find it challenging to discuss gender-related topics with their children in a scientific and age-appropriate manner.

Understanding these common concerns among parents, Vinschool Smart City Primary School organized an experiential activity for students focused on gender education. A highlight of this initiative was the seminar “Talking to Children About Gender,” led by experienced experts with deep professional knowledge:

M.A. Phạm Thị Thanh Mai – Head of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Work, Vietnam Youth Academy

M.A. Nguyễn Thái Duy – Lecturer at the Faculty of Youth Work, Vietnam Youth Academy

Key Topics of the Seminar:

Gender education is not limited to boys and girls.

Experts emphasized the distinctions between gender, biological sex, and social gender stereotypes, as well as topics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, human development from conception, and the structure of reproductive organs. While foundational knowledge is the same for all children, differences arise when discussing unique physical traits and children’s rights based on their gender. A proper and thorough understanding helps children respect their own bodies and learn how to protect themselves. Addressing parents’ and students’ concerns.

Experts answered real-life questions from both parents and students, helping to resolve common difficulties:

Question: What should parents do if they disagree on how to educate their child about gender?

Expert recommendation: Families should establish a consistent educational approach, particularly emphasizing respect for children during puberty. Instead of imposing or forbidding discussions, parents should create an open and safe space where children feel comfortable sharing and expressing themselves.

By following the principle of not avoiding sensitive topics, parents can better connect with their children, encourage open conversations, and provide guidance based on understanding. Acknowledging mistakes and offering appropriate direction based on a child’s perspective will help create a more supportive and effective learning environment.

Through the Science curriculum (Human and Health unit) and CLISE (Character, Life Skills, and Social Education), parents gained further insights into the school’s Gender Education Program. These subjects provide scientific knowledge and help foster open-minded discussions between parents and children about gender-related topics.

After the experiential learning session, many 4th and 5th graders shared that they felt more confident when facing changes in their bodies. They also learned how to build positive and safe relationships. As a result, students became more comfortable asking adults questions about their personal development. With the strong support of parents and teachers, they feel reassured throughout their journey of growth and maturity.

This gender education initiative has contributed to creating a comprehensive and unified learning environment, bridging education at school and at home. It provides students with meaningful learning experiences beyond textbooks and into real life. The seminar was a great success, with over 100 parents participating. Many expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the teachers for their dedication and guidance in educating their children.
