The roundtable discussion was centered on traffic safety. This is also the main theme of the recent program “Vinschool Ambassadors – Safe transportation – Saving thousands of lives” in Ha Noi. Hollywood star Michelle Yeoh joined as Ambassador of the global #3500LIVES traffic safety campaign.

During the discussion with Michelle Yeoh, the Ambassadors shared their views on raising public awareness while on the road.

The programme, entitled “Vinschool Small Ambassadors: Safe transportation – Saving thousands of lives”, is part of the #3500LIVES traffic safety campaign, which reminds people that 3,500 people die on the road every day across the world.

Through the campaign, Vinschool wants to work with the whole community to minimise casualties from traffic accidents through education, raising awareness of students and parents when they are on the road. Vinschool will put 12 FIA safe traffic rules into its life skills education programme to raise student awareness and teach life-saving skills. The school has also created a plan to turn areas around the school into safe zones by limiting the speed of the vehicles to minimise the risk of accidents for students.

At the event, the National Traffic Safety Committee Office and the Việt Nam MotorSports Association signed a coordination programme on the implementation of the #3500LIVES programme in Việt Nam during the 2019-22 period.

The programme will focus on six key activities, including the dissemination of the 12 golden rules for safe driving, providing helmets and instructing on helmet use for primary school students, providing first aid to accident victims and building pilot traffic safety communities in schools and hospitals.

Launched for the first time in 2017 by FIA, the #3500LIVES campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of traffic safety. The campaign represents FIA’s commitment to fulfill the United Nations’ goal of halving traffic accidents by 2020.

The panel also allowed students to present specific ideas to realize their mandate as part of the global #3500lives campaign.

“As a primary student, I will remind my family, and then people around me like my friends, my teachers to be aware of their own safety when in traffic. I once saw a man who didn’t fasten his seatbelt when he was driving. Some people are even texting, watching football, using phones, surfing the internet while riding motorbikes. From what I learn to day, I will make a presentation for my family, my friends, and my teachers. I’ll share about the danger of traffic accidents and explain the 12 SAFE STEPS to my family and friends to raise their awareness and encourage them to follow such simple safety steps. By doing this, we can ensure a better future for our young generation.” – Ambassador Tuong Lam, 4th grader from Vinschool Middle school, conversed fluently with Michelle Yeoh.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Ha Khanh Phuong (9th grader from Vinschool Middle school) proposed a communications campaign on social media to increase awareness on road safety.

“I think of social media as a powerful platform to raise awareness. By sharing my messages, my thoughts on social media I would be able to influence people around me.”

Ambassador Dieu Han stated that believes more attention should be paid to effective transport policies as well as lobbying efforts.

“Since the Government issued a regulation which requires all motorbike riders to wear safety helmets and penalizes people who violate the regulation in 2007, the number of deaths has decreased significantly. So, I believe that in order to raise awareness of the whole society, our generation should lobby for traffic law improvement and launch campaign to encourage people to use public transport more often.”

Michelle Yeoh agreed with Dieu Han and did not forget to share a “gentle reminder” for Vietnamese parents who have not paid due attention to road safety for children.

“I remember the last time I came here to promote safety steps, I noticed them parents come to pick up the students. The parents had the helmet but the kids still wearing caps.”

“I think every student should show your commitment to the fact that road safety is the priority for you and should be a commitment on your own part. Learn to take care of yourself, be good to yourself, stay healthy and stay wise. I am delighted to know that Vinschool will incorporate the 12 safe driving principles of FIA into its life-skill curriculum. That would be fantastic if Vinschool could be our demo to show how it can be done in the best possible way and then grow and spread to other places as well.”
