History is a subject that explores the formation and development of human society, the nature of major changes, the evolution of civilizations, and the roles of nations across different periods. In the Grade 5 History curriculum, students broaden their understanding of Vietnamese history through key milestones—from the establishment of the earliest states on Vietnamese territory to major struggles for independence and the process of building and defending the nation.

Through the lesson “The struggle for national independence during the period of Northern domination,” Grade 5 Vinsers revisited a heroic chapter of national history by arranging information along a timeline and presenting stories of historical figures such as the Trung Sisters, Lady Trieu, Ly Bi, Phung Hung, Ngo Quyen, and others through role-play storytelling activities.

Organizing events through timeline-based learning
This activity helps students retain knowledge more deeply and clearly understand cause-and-effect relationships between historical events. By identifying the correct sequence of events, Vinsers were able to reconstruct the overall picture of Vietnam’s resilient struggle during the Northern domination period. At the same time, they developed logical thinking, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.

Experiencing history through role play
Key events such as “The uprising of the Trung Sisters” or “Ngo Quyen’s victory over the Southern Han army” were vividly reenacted by the students through skits, presentations, and creative storytelling. Stepping into historical roles not only helped Vinsers better understand the context and spirit of the era, but also provided opportunities to showcase their performance talents.

Through this lesson, students not only enhanced their historical thinking and applied knowledge to real-life contexts, but also fostered a sense of national pride, cultural identity, and responsibility toward the community. These experiences contribute to nurturing the positive qualities of Vietnamese citizens who are confident, globally integrated, and respected around the world.
