Welcoming a world-famous writer to the Vinschool Book Fair 2017

The winner of many prestigious Canadian prizes – Don Aker, who is known to international readers with more than 20 famous teenage books – was in Vietnam for the first time to participate in a series of activities to inspire reading and writing among Vinschool students. This was one of the key activities in the 2017 Vinschool Book Fair organized by Vinschool Education System on November 12.

At the invitation of Vinschool, Don Aker flew from Canada to Vietnam to speak with students and their parents in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In the week before the Book Fair, Don Aker delivered inspirational talks with Vinschool students about how to write and how to become a professional writer. He also shared with them his writing process, the way he observed characters as well as surrounding events and turned it into valuable details in his works.

At theVinschool Book Fair 2017, Don Aker spent time talking to Vinschool parents about issues related to “Understanding adolescence psychology – Role of parents in guiding children.” He gave reasons why children were reluctant to reading, from which he offered solutions and ways for parents to help their children build a reading culture at home.

The Vinschool Book Fair 2017 is an annual event of the Vinschool Education System. This year’s program was held on November 12, 2017 with the theme of “21st-Century Vinsers – Integrate through each page”. This was part of a series of activities of the Reading Culture development of Vinschool students that is built and developed throughout the academic year.

Exciting and meaningful activities at the Vinschool Book Fair 2017 attracted thousands of families whose children range from kindergarten to high school ages. The Vinschool Book Fair truly became a place for parents and students to develop a reading culture and express love for books.

Parents and students attending the program had access to more than 15,000 quality books of all genres from prestigious publishers. In addition, the program offered a variety of activities, organized a playground for students as well as useful workshops for parents to foster and develop reading culture for their children.

There was an exhibition of creative and impressive book covers made by students. By making covers of books and stories that they love, illustrating a story, or depicting a character in a particular book, students had a chance to express their thoughts in this playground.

The creativity of students was clearly marked on the display of the Reading Journals designed by students in Vietnamese and English under unique forms, from handmade notebooks, mind maps, paintings, character drawings, comic books to commentaries. During the school year, after making plans and setting goals for their book reading each month, students then wrote their feelings about the book in their Reading Journals.

Vinschool students were also proactively involved in donating books to the project of “Loving Book Cabinet”, selling old books to raise money in order to build schools for poor children. These activities demonstrated students’ interest and responsibility for the community – values emphasized by the school in educational programs.
